Updates from Sunrise Rotary...
And some fun opportunities!

Next Tuesday, October 23, 2018 is the Fourth Tuesday of October...  you know what that means... Moonrise Rotary!!!
We have the opportunity to have a fall hayride in Duluth, MN at 6:30 p.m.  The cost per person will be $9.00.  We need 15 to RSVP in order to make the hayride happen.  There is room for up to 35 people in the wagon.  PLEASE, confirm your interest, or e-mail me.  If we do not get 15 committed we will make other plans.  DEADLINE TO REGISTER IS THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18 at NOON!  If the hayride ends up going forward, we will be having a dinner afterward at a nearby location. If there is not enough interest, Moonrise will be held at the Shamrock.  Oh yes... pizza.

FUNDRAISER OPPORTUNITY:
Wessman Arena has offered our club the opportunity to work concessions at the UWS Men's Hockey home opening weekend on October 26 and 27.  We need four to six workers per night from 5:30 - about 10:00 pm.  The pay is $250 per night to our club.  Please use the Event Page to sign up for either the 26th or the 27th, or BOTH!

ROTORACT WORLD POLIO DAY EVENT WANTS OUR HELP.
Makenzie McFarlane attended this morning's meeting to invite us all to help with the Twin Ports' Rotoract's World Polio Day Livestream.  On October 24, 2018 at 5:30 pm.  The Facebook Livestream can be joined either by following Rotoract on Facebook or by heading to the UMD Campus - Montague Hall 70.

OTHER NEWS AND DEVELOPMENTS...
Our club has been asked to help with a few more community events and projects:
- Taking over the annual "Lighting of the City Christmas Tree" celebration.  This would include logistics of snacks, hot chocolate, etc.  It would be a great opportunity to incorporate some of Rotary's missions - perhaps a giveaway of holiday or winter themed books to kids?  Or ask attendees for donations to the Paul Harris Foundation? A toy collection for Salvation Army or the Sherrif's/Police Department?
-  A local group is working on developing an ADA accessible playground in the City.  Be sure to attend November 6th when we are joined by Linda Cadotte and Mayor Jim Payne to discuss how our club can get more involved with local parks and playgrounds.

LOOKING AHEAD...
Before we know it, November is going to be here which leads us all into that hectic season of holiday preparations, parties, shopping and more.  Please keep in mind that we have committed to:

Salvation Army Bell Ringing on November 27, 2018 as part of our Moonrise Rotary. More details coming soon.
Salvation Army Adopt a Family which will hopefully find us gathering to wrap gifts at some point in mid-December.
Lake Superior Ice Festival Parking on Friday, January 25, 2019 and Saturday, January 26, 2019. We still have the option of sponsoring an igloo building competition. Please let Johanna know if you are interested in helping with that.

WORLD POLIO DAY
OCTOBER 24, 2018.

In 1985, Rotary launched its PolioPlus program, the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication through the mass vaccination of children. Rotary has contributed more than $1.7 billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. In addition, Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by donor governments to contribute more than $7.2 billion to the effort.
Today, there are only three countries that have never stopped transmission of the wild poliovirus: Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. Just 37 polio cases were confirmed worldwide in 2016, which is a reduction of more than 99.9 percent since the 1980s, when the world saw about 1,000 cases per day.
